Google Quick Search Box

Google's Quick Search Box appears to be what is already built into Mac OS X as Spotlight. Not sure why Google would make an app like this, as Spotlight works just fine.

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at 9:43AM At least a couple times a week, I check out other agency blogs to see what they’re up to. They are agencies that I admire and the few blogs from designers that I actually find interesting enough to read. This week, I visited ‘Noise to Signal’ the blog of my previous agency NDG Communications and couldn’t believe their newest entry, “NDG Receives Multiple Awards for New Civista Health Website”. I was the lead designer for the new Civista website, and am very excited that my work has been recognized by my peers of the Addy Awards and is now being honored by healthcare marketing professionals by winning Silver from the Aster Awards, “a medical marketing awards program allowing healthcare organizations and advertising agencies to compete against similarly sized competitors from across the nation and world.” And also winning the Award of Merit from The Healthcare Advertising Awards, “the oldest, largest and most widely respected healthcare advertising awards competition.”

Received a call the other day from a branding expert, who runs a very successful branding competition that enlists judges from leading agencies in the country. She called our agency simply to say hello and to tell us how much she admired our work, our blogs and our start-up story. There was even some talk about doing some work together for some of her current and future endeavorers.
This was very exciting news for us, but especially for me because whenever I’m in need of inspiration for a branding project, I always turn to her website for tons of great rebranding work and insight into each project. Her website and competition is one I’ve admired for years and it’s totally an honor for her to reach out to us. Her simple phone call made my day and I wanted to share the good news with one of my biggest supporters, my dad.
However, it dawned on me, that for my dad to fully appreciate the good news and to satisfy his inquisitive nature, I’m going to have to explain to him what branding is. For people not in the creative industry, it’s hard to fully grasp what branding is, as there are so many varying definitions, interpretations and beliefs on the subject. I needed a way to really simplify my explanation and make it easy to digest. So I came up with this....
Branding is like a person.
No two people on this planet are the same. Everyone has distinct characteristics that make them who they are, which when thrown into the public arena, those characteristics help the public determine if you’re likable, cool, smart, dull, powerful, etc... Hell, even twins have their own unique style of fashion, unique personalities and a slew of other factors to help them stand out from each other. A company’s brand should be no different.
Think of the logo as the face of a company. It’s the first thing you see when interacting with a person. This initial interaction helps you determine many things about this person/company. Does he look like an interesting person? Does he look kind and caring? Does he look like a homicidal maniac? Would you want to run into him again? I could go on and on, but I think you get the point.
The wardrobe is next and I’d compare this to the color palette, typographic style, imagery style and overall look of the company. Compare a person in a business suit to someone wearing t-shirt and jeans. Your reaction to each person is going to be different and affect how you interact with them. The two could even be those twins I mentioned before, and even though their face is the same, depending on your personality, you’re going to make initial judgments about each, which could be the beginning or never was of a relationship.
So the company has a face and a wardrobe, their is still one critical factor missing that will help determine the company’s brand, the person’s personality. Each person goes through numerous experiences that help shape who they become. Did he come from nothing and build himself into a mogul? Did he work hard his whole life slowly climbing the corporate ladder only to realize he could run his own business? Did he wake up one day and realize he couldn’t spend another day in a cubicle? These experiences help shape a company’s voice and how it will communicate to the public. As every individual in the world has a unique way of speaking and unique experiences that mold them into who they are, so should a company’s brand.
So there we have it, a simple way to explain to my father what branding is. Branding is the characteristics, personality and history that makes a person who they are, but for companies. After explaining this to him, he seemed to actually get it.
Monday, April 27, 2009 at 10:00AM So I'm in the middle of designing a website, when my 6 year old daughter comes into the office to show me the posters she just made for her new band, the X Out Edition. Not sure about the name, but hey, this is a story about her logo, not naming abilities. As I take a look at all seven of them, truth be told, I'm not very impressed. See, she likes to get things done fast and quality just isn't a concern of hers yet. But I do notice a consistency on each poster. It's a logo for the band. Now I'm proud...lol... and upon a second look, I'm rather impressed with the logo. So without further adieu, I bring to you, Rae's first logo. I made a digital version and now I'm even more impressed. It's clean, simple and distinguishable, just how I like my logos. Daddy's little girl has skills.

Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at 2:18PM Here is some new web design work we've been working on the last few months.

Friday, April 10, 2009 at 12:53PM I've been an admirer of Burger Kings advertising for the past year or so. I really took notice when they launched the Facebook campaign, Whopper Sacrifice, where you had to delete 10 of your Facebook friends to get a free Whopper. The masses ate it up and as far as I know, it was a successful campaign. Fast forward to their latest TV ad featuring a spoof of Sir Mix a Lot's "Baby Got Back" song promoting their $.99 kids meal and my initial reaction was disgust.
You've got dancers in the background shaking their butts, the King measuring butts and the icing on the cake is Sir Mix a Lot saying, "Booty is Booty" at the end of the commercial. Immediately after the commercial ended, my wife and I turned and looked at each other and began to discuss how inappropriate that commercial is for promoting a kids meal. These days it seems like TV is getting less and less cautious with what they allow broadcasted on regular channels. When I was a kid they couldn't get away with saying ass on TV, nowadays I hear ass, damn and bitch on a regular basis. Where do we draw the line?
Then last night, as I'm lying in bed trying to sleep it hit me that the Burger King commercial is for adults not children. Kids don't care how much the kids meal costs. The commercial wasn't promoting a new toy or new food for kids, the only incentive it was promoting was the price. So when you think about it, Burger King was dead-on with this commercial. Their audience are people who were fans of the famous "Baby Got Back" song. I remember watching the video with my father when it came out and now here I am with three kids, two of which are of age for the kids meal. The commercial is a little raunchy for my taste, but again I have to give it to Burger King for yet again another successful promotion.

Ogilvy & Mather Dusseldorf came up with this outstanding concept to support a most urgent cause, feeding kids in their community. We often lend the power of images to ignite an emotional response, but Donate-A-Meal, takes it much further.
